# of Pages:1
Publishing Information:Lawrence, KS: Golf Course Superintendents Association of America
Keywords:Golf courses; Liability; Health; Equipment; State legislation; Golf course safety
Abstract:Discusses the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) on the golf course. States that "sudden cardiac arrest is the [number] 1 cause of death on golf courses in the United States...[and] golf courses rank fifth in the places where it occurs most often." Describes "the primary cause of sudden cardiac arrest...ventricular fibrillation, which occurs when the heart's normal electrical signals become erratic and cause the heart to stop pumping blood effectively...Chances of survival are reduced by 10 percent with every minute that passes, and few attempts at resuscitation suceed after 10 minutes." States that "according to the American Heart Association defibrillation is the only definitive treatment for sudden cardiac arrest." Reports that "some golf courses have implemented [AED] programs to try to help increase the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest victims...[but other] golf facilities have not established AED programs because of concerns about legal liability." Lists "suggested guidelines for establishing an AED program", including securing medical direction and control of the workplace AED program, ensuring awareness and compliance with federal and state regulations, developing a written AED program for each location, and assessing the proper number and placement of AEDs and ancillary equipment.

Title:A safe play: An automated external defibrillator could be the critical link between your golf course and life-saving cardiac treatment
Source:Golf Course Management. Vol. 66, No. 6, June 1998, p. 146, 150, 152-153.
# of Pages:4
Publishing Information:Lawrence, KS: Golf Course Superintendents Association of America
Keywords:Golf courses; Health; Safety; Equipment; Decision-making; Liability
Abstract:Discusses automated external defibrillators (AEDs), devices that allow non-medical professionals to provide some care in the case of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Suggests that with AEDs, "even people without extensive medical training can provide life-saving treatment in the critical minutes before the ambulence arrives." Explains that "the expertise needed to analyze the heart's function is programmed into the [AED]." Describes SCA, stating that "SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction of the heart called ventricular fibrillation (VF) - an ineffective quivering of the heart muscle that makes it unable to pump blood through the body." Offers recommendations for starting an AED training program on a golf course. Mentions AED-related liability issues.

Title:This device could save your life: Golf course get into the business of saving lives
Source:Grass Clippings [Idaho]. Vol. Summer issue, July 2002, p. 23-26.
# of Pages:4
Publishing Information:Shelby, MI: Idaho GCSA
Keywords:Health; Staff training; Golf courses; Safety; Legislation
Abstract:Discusses the increased incidence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the United States. Explains a way to help people who suffer SCA, by administering "a defibrillation shock within 4 to 6 minutes following onset." Explains that "although it buys time, CPR will not ultimately save the life of someone in SCA." Discusses having defibrillation units on golf course properties, stating that "Plymouth [Country Club] has two AED units on the property - one in the pro shop and one in the clubhouse." Explains that "the AED interrupts the irregular rhythm with brief, powerful, electrical stimulation to the chest. This restores the heart's natural rhythm, and the flow of oxygenated blood returns to the brain." Discusses the window of survival during SCA and the survival chances if defillibration is administered within 10 minutes. Cites country clubs that have AEDs on the property, and the lives that have been saved as a result. Discusses the risks involved in AED, but states that "to date, there have been no known lawsuits against lay rescuers providing CPR as `Good Samaritan,' nor against any AED users." Explains the costs involved in having a defibrillator on the property. States that "Nationwide, there are approximately 4,000 clubs with AEDs, 1,500 of which are supplied by CardioReady and AvanTech."
